LaGrange College Site

How to get there:
This site is just off 157, about 4 miles west of Leighton heading toward Muscle Shoals or 8 miles east of Muscle Shoals if heading East.  There are signs marking '2 miles to LaGrange College Site' in each direction on 157.  Turn onto LaGrange College Road (you won't miss it-there is a large cut-out photo op, see below) and keep to the right, the park is just at the top of the hill on the right, park on the grass near the pavillion, following the signs.

What to expect:

There is a covered picnic pavillion with bathrooms and a fireplace, plenty of wood piled against the side of the building when we were there!
There is a small playground with great swings, several picnic tables scattered around and a pretty nice view of some farmland and the road you drove in on.
There are many 'pioneer' type buildings, including a school building and a welcome center with very specific hours: 1-4 on Sunday.
There is a good bit of open space to run around in and a small plaque and sign explaining the significance of the site (see photos below)

After leaving the park, make a right and continue to the end of LaGrange College Road.  There is a wonderful old cemetery located here, tucked in between large tracts of woodland on all side at the end of this dead-end road.  It is very peaceful and beautiful and filled with history and insight-girls buried at 17 who were already wives and mothers, men with ornate headstones buried next to wives with only their initials carved on their small stone.  And of course babies and children, who always lend a somber air and give any mother pause to count her own blessings.

With wildflowers, large trees, rolling hills, it's as pretty a place as I can think of in the state.
